Ask five agencies what a website costs and you will get five numbers, sometimes ten. From Rs 8,000 to Rs 8 lakh, all for “a website”. That range is not dishonesty. It is five different products wearing the same name. This post explains what actually drives the price, so you can compare quotes properly.
The three things you are actually paying for
1. Thinking. Who are your customers? What decision do they need to make? What should each page do? A Rs 8,000 website skips this entirely. Someone opens a template, drops your logo in, and changes the colours. The site exists, but it was never designed to do a job.
2. Design and build. Custom design costs more than a template because someone has to make decisions: layout, hierarchy, what goes first, what gets cut. A build you own outright costs more than a locked platform because it is set up properly, on your hosting, in your name.
3. Everything around the build. Domain, hosting, business email, analytics, basic SEO, testing on real phones, and a handover so you can edit your own site. Cheap quotes leave these out and add them later. Honest quotes name them upfront.
Why quotes vary so much in India
A freelancer with a template can genuinely deliver at Rs 8,000 to 15,000, because there is no strategy work and no custom design. A mid-sized agency quoting Rs 2 to 8 lakh is not necessarily better at websites. You are also paying for their office, their account managers and their sales team. A founder-led studio sits in between: the same strategic work an agency would do, without the overhead built into the price.
None of these are wrong. They are different purchases. The problem is only when you pay agency prices for template work, or expect strategy at template prices.
The questions that expose a quote
Before you compare numbers, ask each provider these five questions. What exactly is included, page by page? Who owns the website and the hosting account when we are done? What happens if I want to add a page next year? Is the design custom or a template? What is not included in this price?
The cheapest quote usually gets expensive at question five.
How I price it
Sylntra works on fixed packages: Launch at Rs 19,999 for 4 pages, Growth at Rs 29,999 for 6, Scale at Rs 44,999 for 10. Every package includes the strategy work, custom design, a WordPress build you own outright, and a handover walkthrough. Third-party costs like hosting and paid plugins are named separately, before we start, so there are no surprises at the end.
